One of the key benefits of open source is that it’s possible to understand how a system works. Nowhere is this transparency more essential than in elections. Unless we can be sure that there are no hidden backdoors, no ability to influence the results, we can’t rely on electronic voting systems, despite all the benefits they provide in speeding elections and reducing their cost. Gregory Miller, co-director of the Open Source Digital Voting Systems initiative, will give us an overview of the current state of electronic voting systems and the role that open source can play in making them more trustworthy.
