President Obama elevated the importance of technology, data and innovation with the appointment of a national CTO and CIO. The two leaders will share their vision for technological innovation, public sector excellence, and the application of technology in national priorities like health IT, smart grid and education.

Chopra serves as the Federal Chief Technology Officer. In this role, Chopra promotes technological innovation to help the country meet its goals from job creation, to reducing health-care costs, to protecting the homeland. Prior to his confirmation, he served as Virginia’s Secretary of Technology. He lead the Commonwealth’s strategy to effectively leverage technology in government reform, to promote Virginia’s innovation agenda, and to foster technology-related economic development. Previously, he worked as Managing Director with the Advisory Board Company, leading the firm’s Financial Leadership Council and the Working Council for Health Plan Executives.

Vivek Kundra was appointed as the United States Chief Information Officer by President Obama in March 2009. Prior to joining the Obama administration, Kundra served in Mayor Fenty’s cabinet as the CTO for the District of Columbia and Governor Kaine’s cabinet as Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He has also served in leadership roles in the private sector.

Kundra has been recognized as the 2009 Chief of the Year by InformationWeek for driving unprecedented change in Federal IT and as the 2008 IT Executive of the Year for his pioneering work to drive transparency, engage citizens and lower the cost of government operations. He has also been recognized by InfoWorld among the top 25 CTO’s in the country.
